On Wednesday, September 22, 2021, AWB held its sixth annual Hero Award fundraiser at Water Works in Philadelphia PA. The event was special for many reasons especially because it was the first big event for AWB since the pandemic. It was an outdoor event with a live and silent auction with Josh Katz the auctioneer. Josh was fabulous and brought a lot of energy to the live auction. One of the senior AWB actor, Simon, sang “My Funny Valentine” and did a wonderful job.

The main event for the evening was the presentation of the Hero Award. The Hero Award is given to a person with a physical disability who has made a difference in their community. This years’ recipient was Jimmy Curran. Jimmy is a graduate of Temple University who is a research analyst at Independence Blue Cross. He is an advocate for people with disabilities. In 2017 he wrote a children’s book “Will the One-Winged Eagle”. Jimmy is the co-founder of an apparel brand {dis} ABLE which combats the stigma around disability, and was recently featured in a Comcast commercial using the company’s new eye gaze technology.

The event was wonderful thanks to the AWB Board and Committee and staff who made the evening so special.
