Volunteer Spotlight: Kaylie Shojaie

Volunteers are the unsung heroes of the AWB Senior and Junior programs. Our programs simply would not run as smoothly—or successfully—without their dedication, energy, and heart.

One of those heroes is Kaylie Shojaie, a longtime volunteer with AWB Junior. Originally from Pittsburgh, Kaylie moved to Philadelphia after graduating from Penn State and now works at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. During college, she was part of a musical theater group called Harmony, which served people with disabilities. That experience sparked a love for inclusive theater, and when she began searching for a similar program in Philadelphia, she found AWB.

Kaylie chose to volunteer with the Junior program, and while she wasn’t quite sure what to expect at first, she knew after her very first rehearsal that she had found something special. She immediately felt connected to the actors and has been a dedicated part of the AWB family ever since. For several years now, Kaylie has faithfully attended monthly workshops and performances, helping our young actors grow in confidence and skill.

As a Junior volunteer, Kaylie supports the actors with their lines, songs, and character development under the guidance of the Artistic Director. During performances, she assists with blocking and provides gentle reminders when needed—always ready to step in wherever she’s needed to ensure the success of the show.

When asked what keeps her coming back, Kaylie says it’s the relationships she has built with the actors, fellow volunteers, and staff. “Everyone involved in AWB is truly wonderful,” she shared. Last spring, Kaylie’s commitment and compassion were recognized when she received the Devon Lengel Memorial Award for her service at the AWB Junior performance.

Kaylie believes that volunteering with AWB has made her a kinder and better person. As she puts it, AWB is making the world a better place—more inclusive—and we should all want to be part of something like that.”

AWB relies on volunteers.

The first Sunday of every month volunteers assist our actors at workshops as they learn their lines and rehearse their parts. Our most dedicated volunteers support our actors throughout the year and are a part of the yearly performance. There are opportunities for people who want a creative outlet through set design, props and costume development. Great for early teens, adults and seniors!
